Sally Stern:

Wait, I've Been This Way Before

Wait, I've Been This Way Before

Wait
I've been this way before.
I know these shapes
And textures under blind fingers.

I know that I shall be the sea
And the mother
And never me.
Wait
I am here
Under the sea
Recognize me.

Tongue tempted, teased
You reach, breathing
To break like sky-fires
In an inward breath
And then you kiss my mouth,
Then.
And rest
Like a child suckling
In its innocence.

All right it's not me
It's the mother and the sea.
