The Monkey King Journeys West

*

In 1978 I was really struck by a performance of the Monkey King Journels to the WEst put on by the Rochester Folk Art Guild. Soon I purchased the book, and a few years later I performed in another production from the same text. In 1988, I was able to purchase in Chengdu, Szechuan Province, an English version of a comic book telling of the same story. This connection of graphic arts with the tale really interested me. Thus, I am only too pleased to tell you students a piece of the story.

"The Monkey"or "The Monkey King" is the mischievous protagonist from the ancient Chinese folk tale, Journey to the West. He is born from stone and the novel follows his adventures in search of the Sutra, the Buddhist holy book. The legend probably has its roots in India .Thus although the Monkey King is a Chinese legend, like many of us, his lineage can be traced back to various parts of Asia.
