These are copy/paste of feedback/comments my
students send through official SUNY evaluation form and a few through emails.
Spring 2009 (there is a SUNY copy of a mix of course
and professor evaluation here)
- Professor Vu was very effective and
built in good parts of the class time to make sure everyone could understand
whatwas going on and gave us an incentive to participate with bonus points
which kept people much more alert than a normal math class.
- Very fair teacher. Offered extra
credit for hardworking students to improve their grade. Made math an
enjoyable class as compared to previously taken math courses
- Put simply, he is Phu Vu. Hard to
beat.
- Impossible not to get an A in this
class.
- i thought that Phu Vu was an
excellent teacher. he really made learning more fun.
- Understanding and always there to
give gudiance.
- He is the best Math teacher out
there, he is willing to help and go through topics over and over again if
you are having a difficult time. He has a strong accent but if you pay close
attention in class it shouldn't be so much of a problem. I would recommend
him to anyone of my fellow student. It is a class you can get an A in if you
focus and do all the homeworks. Great teacher
- He can make anyone understand
anything. He is really helpful in explaining. Also though he may have an
accent, his examples and drawings help make up for that. He is really nice
and approachable. Highly recommended.
- He was very helpful and was always
willing to clarify any questions. Also, he was very approachable and always
ready to help students.
- The instructor made it very easy to
understand the course. He went over everything thoroughly and answered
everyone's question. He also made learning the subject matter fun with
worksheets and fun homeworks.
- Mr. Vu was awesome. He taught the
class so anyone could understand it and gave many examples for applying
certain concepts. Due dates and tests were clearly announced and he reviewed
them both.
- Phu was a great teacher. He presented
the information in the most basic way possible, provided multiple examples
and made it easy to learn. Great teacher all around.
- Professor Vu was very knowledgeable
and knew what he was talking about but he's very hard to understand, and
mumbles a lot.
- The teacher was quite effective. It
is a hard course
- Great Teacher. He is also always
there if you need any help and his website is very useful.
- Easy and nice professor, explain the
materia clear in the class.
- good professor, understands not
everyone is not a math major, sometimes hard to understand
- More examples related to test
questions/homework.
- Professor Vu helped me to understand
calculus a bit better. He gave lots of examples that helped with the
homework. His lectures were very thorough and concise.
- Not only did we get a further
understanding of Calculus, but we also had an understanding of it's
applications
- Having different notes posted online
than what was given in class helped to give a different perspective on how
to learn
- the teacher was excellent he
explained everything very well. the best math teacher i have ever had.
- Gave enough time to maneuver, to gain
a better comprehension of material
- The textbook should not be listed as
a requirement for the class since it is not used.
- More review on homework problems, a
lot of the time the homework was way more difficult then the examples given
in class.
- Make it so all group members have to
contribute.
- The lecture notes posted online as an
outline of what we would be learning in the upcoming weeks helped studying,
the fast paced classes, and easy way the material was taught.
- Prof. Vu is an extremely intelligent
man whose main focus in this course was to help his students succeed. If you
need any help he will, without a doubt, help you.
- Good Instructor
- the best teacher that i have had here
at UB
- The lectures were helpful.
- The course information was well
spread out and was reviewed thoroughly which made it easier to understand
what was being taught.
- enjoyed this course a lot more than I
did Calc. I. I felt the material was more easily spread out and much more
understandable.
- The website was a very useful
resourse.
- Suggestion: Not much, nothing in
particular. Course was effective in helping me understand the materials
- When I took MTH 121, I really liked
the "My Math Lab" that went along with it. I think it helped me learn the
class material much more effectively than the quizzes or homework did in
this class. With written homework, much of the time there isn't an
opportunity to see if it's correct or not until the grade comes back. With
the Math Lab you were able to rework the problem until it was correct. I
think that this method is more in keeping with the spirit of homework.
Homework is for the purpose of learning the material, you shouldn't have to
be worried about your homework grade if you actually did the homework,
that's what tests are for.
- More examples in the online notes
- It was a pleasure being in your class and I have realized that you have
thoroughly prepared us for each and every homework exam and quiz. Thank you
for working so hard to share your knowledge with others. I am unprepared for
this test and I will take a grade of zero. Again, thank you for the
willingness to teach.
- Thank you Very much I really appreciate.
- Just wanted to say thank you for today. That should not have happened
and sorry about wasting your time. Thank you for a great semester
- I hope we have a great semester, this seems like a fun interesting class
- Thank you and i am looking forward to a great semester with you!
- I enjoyed the first lecture with you. Thank you. See you again tomorrow.
Fall 2008
- He was an amazing professor because he was very understanding and would
do a lot of examples to better our understanding of the material. Also, he
offered problems for us to do on our own. You could tell that he really
wanted everyone to understand the material and be successful.
- the course was taught for students familiar with calculus and were
prepared to study and do the required homework
- phu was an excellent teacher. he really wanted to see his students
excell in not only math but future endeavors. he used excellent analagies
that related math to real life. for being such a young teacher you wouldn't
have noticed it (he taught at a level of someone twice his age). most
importantly, phu genuinly loved math (when a teacher loves the subject that
they teach, they do a much better job at it, as seen in phu vu). his grading
policies were easy to uinderstand and very generous. i would take one of his
classes again if i could. Phu was extremely motivated which made his class
all the better. i have all confidence that he will do a magnificent job at
whatever the future has in store for him.
- He was good at teaching calculus on a level that students can
understand.
- Very effective, all of the material was taught well. You could tell he
really knew his material and enjoyed his job. This was probably my favorite
teacher I've ever had. GO PHU
- very good professor would reccommend to anyone
- Good outline and examples, actively encourages participations from the
students and makes himself available for quetsions and concerns. Very
willing to assist students and help us learn.
- The professor was a bit confusing when explaining concepts. If it was
not for the textbook, I think I would have a hard time in this class.
- best math teacher i have ever had
- a very good teacher overall
- The instructor was really easy and helped many of the students
understand the concepts of the course.
- The teacher was friendly and gave a lot of opportunities to get credit.
He explained problems pretty well
- He was very effective! A lot of the students are doing very well!
- plz teach us more easy way..
- Very good knows what he is teaching. Sometimes just hard to understand
- everything is fine
- He did a good job.
- I look forward to attending
your class with high goals set
in place

Summer 2008
Spring 2008
-
- piece of cake if follow his instruction, dont even have
to take all of the exams. He sometimes teaches differently from the text,
but who cares, his ways seem to be simpler most of the time.
- good course, great and kinda cute professor
- gave a lot of extra credits and board bonus scores,
easy class, nice professor, great time.
- very nice and effective. I didnt get A as easily as
some ppl in class did, but still fair.
- great professor. makes this course look easy
- Very effective instructor he understand's the material
and how to present the material. One thing that he could change is to slow
his lecture down when showing examples so the student can better understand
the concepts.
- excellent, lineient
- In the beginning of the semester never answered class
questions but changed as class progressed.
- He gives examples aiming to help students to understand
the problems better. He is a very nice and patient instructor who answers
questions thoroughly.
- The instructor's style of teaching is hard to
understand. He does not break things down to a level the students can
understand. A small percentage of the class actually understood what he was
trying to teach.
- He answered all questions and provided concepts to
problems which are much more useful than regular examples.
- The instructor was effective and knew the material well
when teaching, although much of classtime was wasted. Class could have been
cut shorter or introduced new topics to fill up the time.
- Mr. Vu was extremly effective at teaching and I felt
that I learned a lot. I was well prepared for the exams and the homework
really helped me to understand the subjects. Mr. Vu was also quick to reply
to questions the class had outside of class, and made plently of time
available for office hours
- He was very effective in teaching the material and
always went over examples to help the students understand better. I think he
succeeded in teaching the material and the homeworks helped a lot.
- Half the time I couldn't understand him. He taught too
fast and chose random things to teach us. We weren't doing the same things
as other class. Test questions used hard numbers that didn't compute well.
He taught a lot of alternative methods, and only those, and if you you did
things the way the book showed, you wouldn't earn partial credit. I think
they need better MTH 115 teachers; I always hear bad things about this class
level.
This student must have had wrong answers for some questions, because
almost all of my questions are designed in a way that the results are always
simple and easily computed even without calculator. The book sometimes uses
a confusing or long or too complicated method, that's why sometimes I
introduced different techniques. A few students didnt go to class and got
trouble because they didnt know how to use the new method while using the
old method might take too long or easily make mistakes.
- great instructor.... uses effective teaching and is
friendly and makes class enjoyable
- I think the teacher and his ability to communicate far
better and clear to students.
- Phu seems like a nice guy. He is not a very good
teacher. I could barely follow half of what he was doing. Much of what he
wrote on the board was illegible. Overall the course was a nightmare. A very
easy class to pass (no complaint there) but I feel like I didn't learn much.
I took this class to prepare me for Calc 1. I do not feel the least bit
prepared. Very dissatisfied.
- Explain how problems are done instead of just doing
them. Sometimes would go too far in-depth with problems which was
unnecessary and confusing
- Very fair, gives good examples on the board. A little
hard to understand at times, because of his accent
- Thanks for a great semester
- haha phu vu...you are THE smartest teacher and THE
funniest...and all the ladies love you
- phuuuuu!!!!!!!!!! VUUUUUU!!!!!!!
- Hi Mr. Vu, I thoroughly enjoyed your math class and I
thought you were an excellent teacher. If there is a teacher evaluation to
fill out on myUB I will do so and give you high marks. Thank you Mr. Vu for
a great math class!
- Thank you for a wonderful semester!
- Ok. Thanks a lot for a good semester.
- You're so nice, do you teach 131 too, because I want to
take that it with you. The schedule doesnt show instructor name yet, only
noted "staff".
- Story: this one student never hand in homework on
time and always missed tests, for some reason, then came to my office for
make-up test and late due homework. I accepted anyhow, but she didnt do well
anyway. At the end of semester, she didnt have enough points to get an A and
complaint. As a reference for those who werent in this class, I gave
students 5 homework, 6 tests (4 in-class, 1 take home, 1 optional test), and
a lot of bonus questions, in homework and in test, normally bonus question
is 20% extra credit. The optional test is subjected to replace the lowest
test among the first 5, or in case student missed one. There is also board
bonus credit, which award students who go to the board to solve my example
question once or twice. Thus, students can get 5% bonus for once or 10% for
twice, and 10% is like student can get 1 free test with 100/100 points.
Practically, a good student could achieve an A grade by doing well on only
3/5 tests, 4/5 homework. At the end of semester, 23/40 students got an A, 12
got B, 3 got C and 2 failed.
Student: I had a question about the grades. Many of my classmates and I
were wondering what happened to the divide six tests by five, everyone was
looking forward to the extra credit. And I was also wondering how my grade
went down 10points and if there is anything else to do to get my grade back
up
Me: First of all, your grade never went down. The only thing that
might be lower is the percentage, if you dont do as well as you have been
doing. The last column is the quantity that will determine your course
grade. About how I compute the final grade, it is like this: if you take
test 6, then the lowest test score will be omited, then sum up the rest,
divide by five. I stated the purpose of this optional test in very detail:
to replace missing test or low scored test. Why I say sum of 6 tests,
because different people have different situation, some may want to drop
test 1, some may want test 4 dropped, so its not 2,3,4,5,6 or 1,2,3,5,6. I
gave a lot of extra credit questions, bonus for participating in class, so
adding up all 6 tests and divide by 5 just doesnt sound right.
Student: Ok well everyone was confused and
thought that there was an extra credit test, and my grade did go down
Me: Talk to me about this. I will look into the issue. Unless there is a
mistake recording your scores, your course grade shouldnt go down. People
going to lectures and getting good grades, they dont get confused.
Student: First of all, I dont have a bad grade i actually have b . and
second of all, im confused because i dont understand stuff in general
Me: I checked your progress in the course: Your score BEFORE you took test 5
& homework5: Average: 89% Grade 71
Your score AFTER the test (19) & homework (50): Average: 78% Grade 78
This is what you can do: take optional test#6 to
cover/replace test5 (19/100).
Here is what you can expect: If you score at
least 40/100, that will boost your grade to 80 ~ a B+
If you score 90/100, you will get 85 grade points, which is an A-
Student: just know that youre going to get a very terrile evaluation
from me and many other angry students. thanks
Me: Go ahead! There are always bad and good students in one class. You
better check to see how many students got so high grades at so early in the
course.
I just happen to notice that this is not the
first time you sent me email through this IP, but I hold no grude on you
whatsoever. After all, UB has evaluations for students to express any
opinions, freely. You are one of my students, regardless your grades,
regardless you going to my lectures or not.
I hope you could do better on other courses.
Students: Im sorry, one of my friends from your class decided to email
you from my computer, but that wasnt me. i already discussed the issue with
my grade and i am satisfied with my b+. as for my friend who isnt, im sorry
and ill tell them to just let it go.
Me: Its not a big problem, but was my first time ever receiving that
kind of unpleasant behavior. Students go to college to learn, so I guess
they will be better, sooner or later. Have a good summer.
- Student: You were so nice so I thought that I
could slack a bit. Then I turned out to be too lazy and screwed up in the
end. Thanks for giving me chances so I could walked out with a B.
- You are the man!!
Fall 2007
- Phu Vu is the smartest TA. He just jumped the help
center and answered any kind of question from any kind of topics.
- Phu, I stay in the help Center only looking for you.
- he is nice, but hard to understand
- have patience to listen to students, spend extra time
in recitation and office hour to answer question
- very helpful, great TA
- very typical example of international TA, strong
accent. He is smart but doesnt know how to teach.
- very knowledgeable
- Phu Vu knows what hes teaching. A bit difficult to
follow at first, but helpful when you can adapt him.
- Always let the class get out late.
- smart and funny
