Math 650, Partial Differential Equations II, Fall 2008

Revised: Aug. 25, 12:00noon

B. Hassard, hassard@buffalo.edu, 645-6284X103, Rm 226 Mathematics

1. This is the second course in a sequence of two (Math 649-650) but this course does not draw heavily from the material in Math 649. The text is Partial Differential Equations by Lawrence C. Evans, AMS Graduate Studies in Mathematics, 19, 1998.

In Math 650, we will cover Chapter 4, and portions of Chapters 5, 6 and 7. In Math 649, material from Chapters 1 through 3 was discussed.

B.H. lecture notes may be found at http://www.math.buffalo.edu/cgi/650notes.cgi

3. Homework problems will be given regularly in class. The assignments will be collected and graded, and will be returned.

4. There will be a midterm exam (take home) and a final exam (take home). Your course grade will be determined as follows:
40% homework + 30% midterm exam + 30% final exam
Letter grades (plus and minus) will be given unless S/U grading was chosen at the beginning of the term.

5. My office is in the Mathematics building, room 226, and office hours are Monday and Wednesday from 11 to 12.

6. The course website is: www.math.buffalo.edu/~hassard/650/.
