12/07/06, 9:00PM: a new version posted with corrections to problems 2b and 3a.

These are midterm exam problems. You are free to use books, lecture notes and past homework assignments while working on them, but you must solve them entirely on your own. Collaboration, seeking or accepting help from any person is not permitted.

The deadline for submitting exam solutions is Monday, December 11, 11:00 AM. I will collect the papers at 10-11 AM on Monday. If you want to turn in your exam earlier please leave it in my mailbox or deliver it to my office (you can slide it under the door if I am not in).

For full credit solve any 4 problems. If you submit solutions of
more problems then only the first four problems will be graded.
Each problem is worth 25 points.
