| Course description | The course will give an overwiew of basic notions and results of algebra. Some of the topics that will be covered are group theory, ring theory, modules, fields and Galois theory, category theory. Algebraic methods are applicable not only to questions intristic to algebra, but are necessary to study virtually any other branch of mathematics. I will try to point out such connections whenever possible. | ||
| Textbook | Serge Lang, Algebra The basic goal for this semester is to cover chapters I-VI of the book (skipping some topics, expanding on some others and possibly rearranging the order in which they are presented). |
