MTH 628 Algebraic Topology

Prerequisites

I will assume you are familiar with the following material:

  • Topology: basic general topology, CW-complexes, homotopy and homotopy equivalence, the fundamental group of a space.
  • Algebra: groups (including free abelian groups), rings, modules
  • Category theory: notions of a category and a functor.

Textboook

There is no required text for this course, but here are a few books that may be useful:

  • A. Hatcher, Algebraic Topology (Note: this book can be downloaded for free from Allen Hatcher’s website).
  • G. E. Bredon, Topology and Geometry.
  • M. Greenberg, J. Harper, Algebraic Topology: A First Course.

Homework

Homework problems will be asssigned on Thursdays every other week and will be due on Thursday the following week. All homework assignmnets must be typed using LaTeX.

Exams

  • The midterm exam will be given on Thursday, March 16.
  • The final exam will be given on Thursday, May 18 at 8:00-11:00 AM in Math Building 122 (i.e. our regular classroom).

Grading

  • Homework 40%
  • Midterm Exam 25%
  • Final Exam 35%
