The scope of the course will correspond roughly to the content of chapters 1-3 of the textbook. We will discuss some of the fundamental algebraic invariants of topological spaces: homotopy groups, singular homology and cohomology.

Techniques of algebraic topology are applicable not only to questions intrinsic to topology, and they are used in almost any branch of mathematics. I will try to point out such connections whenever possible.

Homework problems will be assigned on Thursday every other week and they will be due on Thursday two weeks later.

Homework:    60%

Final Exam:    40%
