Undergraduate Research
Many opportunities for undergraduate research exist at UB and elsewhere. Students who may be interested in graduate study in mathematics should take advantage of one or more of these opportunities. Updated information can be found at the American Mathematical Society’s page for undergraduates.
Senior Honors Theses
A senior honors thesis is typically completed over two semesters, usually but not always in one's senior year. The student works on a project with a faculty mentor. Typically one registers for MTH499-Independent Study in the fall and then MTH 497-Honors Thesis in Mathematics in the spring. Satisfactory completion of an honors thesis is required to graduate with departmental honors.
URGE to Compute
URGE to Compute provides apprenticeships carrying a $10,000 stipend to each of 12 students annually to conduct research of a computational nature in mathematics and the mathematical sciences. URGE stands for Undergraduate Research Group Experiences, and it is the implementation in Buffalo of the National Science Foundation’s CSUMS program. It is a collaboration of the UB and Buffalo State Mathematics Departments, the UB Physics Department, the UB Center for Computational Research, and the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute. More information on URGE to Compute can be found here.
NSF REU
The National Science Foundation sponsors many different summer research programs for undergraduates. These usually include travel and housing money plus a modest stipend. The current list of NSR REU programs can be found here.
Semester-long programs
These are specially designed programs for mathematics. Many of the available study-abroad programs also offer excellent opportunities to study mathematics.
- Mathematics Advanced Study Semester (MASS) at Penn State
- The Junior Program of the Center for Women in Mathematics at Smith College
- Math in Moscow, semester-long program in English
- Budapest Semesters in Mathematics, semester-long program in English
