Setting up a computer to print to Mathematics Department printers: Aug. 22 2008 B.H.

Introduction:

Contact Science and Engineering Node Services if the computer is administered by Node Services.
Note that SENS generally sets up machines to print using an intermediate machine to host a printing queue,
whereas the directions given below use each individual computer to host a print queue.

The department printers are connected to the (wired) 128.205.113.xxx subnet. AFAIK, printing by means of the standard Windows and Macintosh protocols is NOT supported from computers that are outside of the 128.205.113.xxx subnet. This includes computers connected wirelessly. Printing by means of the standard Windows and Macintosh protocols IS supported from computers physically connected to the 128.205.113.xxx subnet.

The following directions for printer setup are based upon HP JetDirect printing which is a TCP/IP based protocol that passes into the 128.205.113.xxx subnet, and so these directions should work from wireless-connected computers as well as from computers that are directly connected to the subnet.
