From 1987 to 1990 he was an associate professor of physics. Following that appointment and until the end of 1991, he simultaneously served as associate professor and chair of the physics department at Hampton University.

From 1995 to 2000, Calvin W. Lowe was Dean. In 2000, Lowe became the ninth president at Bowie State, an historically black college founded in 1865 and located in Bowie, Md. He replaces Nathanael Pollard Jr., who served as president of Bowie State from 1993 to 1998.

Lowe is the author or co-author of numerous scientific publications, many focusing on the optical properties of various compounds.

 

Lowe and his wife, Tanya, have two children, Maya, 23, and Calvin Allen, 12. He is brother of Walter Lowe.
