Her brother, Desmond Stephens husband to Sonya Stephens, will have his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Florida Institute of Technology. Monica and Desmond Stephens were raised in a military family and did schooling overseas, while never being able to call a specific town or area home.
After completing her Ph.D. Dr. Stephens had a postdoctorate at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in the Department of Atmospheric and Engineering Sciences. From there, a visiting position at Florida State University.
