William Anthony Hawkins jr. earned a B.S. in Mathermatics from Howard University (1970) an M.S. in Physics from Howard University (1970), an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan (1970), and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan (1980). During his Michigan studies and after earning his doctorate, Dr. Hawkins worked at Federal City College (now the university of the District of Columbia), where he became Chair of the Mathematics Department in 1985. In 1990 he became director of the Mathematical Association of America's program SUMMA (Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematicians).
