Gerald Raphael Chachere

Born: 1944, place: Los Angeles

Died: December 14, 2001

BS (1968) and MS (1969) in Mathematics UCLA

Ph.D. (1977) Mathematics UC Berkeley
thesis: Numerical experiments concerning the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a Zoll surface; Advisor: Alan D. Weinstein

When Dr. Chachaere died he was Professor of Mathematics at Howard University

Gerald Raphael Chachere was raised in Watts. But the family comes from Louisiana.

In the nineteen sixties, he chose college onver the Vietnam War. "No one from there ever called me a nigger!", he said. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where earned a B.S. in Mathematics. A year later, 1969, he earned an MS in Mathematics. Gerald earned his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, 1977. In 1977, he joined the Howard University faculty.

Dr. Chachere interest was Numerical Analysis. He published two papers

Chachere, Gerald R. Numerical experiments concerning the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a Zoll surface. J. Differential Geom. 15 (1980), no. 2, 135--159 (1981).

Brown, Lorenzo; Chachere, Gerald A note on the cost elasticity\mhy scale elasticity relation. Econometrica 48 (1980), no. 2, 537--538.
