Financial Aid

The Department currently supports about 50 students on assistantships. These assistantships carry duties such as grading, proctoring exams, assisting students in the mathematics help center, and conducting recitations. The teaching assistants receive a stipend of $16,188 for the academic year together with a tuition scholarship. Summer support is usually available to teaching assistants making satisfactory academic progress. Some advanced students are supported through teaching sections of lower division courses. In addition, the University offers a substantial number of fellowships which carry additional stipends ranging from $1,000 to $8,000. To be considered for a fellowship, applicants must furnish at least three letters of recommendation from people who can assess the applicant's mathematical ability; those wishing to be considered for an assistantship must submit two letters. Submission of GRE scores, including the General GRE & Subject GRE are required. Applications must be completed by January 15th for all. Review of applications starts January 15 and goes through until April.
