Each year the Department supports approximately 50 students, most as teaching assistants. Unlike many other universities, during the first three years of study teaching assistants do not teach their own classes, but instead meet with students in small recitation sections. This means that the time required for teaching duties at the University at Buffalo is generally less than the time required at other institutions. Some advanced students (usually those who have continued beyond the fourth year) have the opportunity to teach their own sections of lower division courses. Students participate in a teaching workshop, and each student's development as a teacher is monitored and guided through both faculty and student evaluations.

Exceptional performance in teaching is recognized annually by Excellence in Teaching awards of the College of Arts and Sciences.
