Calculus is a conceptual course, i.e., your main job in this course is to become familiar with certain basic concepts, like limit, slope, derivative, integral, etc. It is not enough to read about the concepts and think about them. They are abstract and can be difficult. Real understanding is only achieved by doing problems, and attacking concepts from all sides.
If you are having trouble with some concepts in Calculus, it is best to focus on the particular problems with which you have difficulty and bring those problems to an expert. Your first expert resources are your instructor and recitation instructor.
Also available to you is the Math Place which is run by the University Learning Center on the North Campus. This is a free, walk in tutoring service. The Math Place is located in Talbert 113. Their hours are Monday through Friday, 10am - 4pm. Other tutoring programs may be available through special groups; e.g., engineers may seek help through the tutoring program sponsored by the Engineering Dean's office and Educational Opportunity Program participants may seek assistance through the EOP office. Contact your department for further information.
If you wish to hire a private tutor, you may contact the
Math Department or the Learning Center. They will have lists of available private tutors along with their hourly rates.
